Favorite On Campus Coffee Spots: Jonathan x Hallowed Grounds

Regardless of whether you've been at UChicago for two and half quarters or are wrapping up your fourth year at the College, you've undoubtedly spent at least some portion of your time here frequenting your favorite on campus coffee shop.

Whether you gravitate towards these places for a quick shot of caffeine, a study break between classes or to meet up with friends, we've decided to feature MODA bloggers as a part of the Blog's ongoing On Campus Coffee Spots series to discover the intersections between campus culture, fashion and of course, caffeine! Keep scrolling for our unique profile on Jonathan Lim, a second year Global Studies & Political Science double major.

What kinds of RSOs and activities are you involved in on campus?

Alpha Delta Phi, MODA Blog and Spoon University.

Why is Hallowed Grounds your favorite cafe on campus?

Hallowed just has a really chill vibe to it. Personally, I’ve always had good service there, and I really enjoy the décor. Plus, it’s the only student-run café on campus that has pool tables!

How often do you come here?

When I was still living on-campus, I came here at least a few times every week. Nowadays, it’s more like once a week, at best.

What is the best type of activity to do here?

For me, it’s a nice place to get some reading done. I like the buzz of conversation in the background – it’s not too distracting, but it also serves as a kind of white noise, almost.

What’s your go-to drink?

My go-to drink is usually whatever coffee’s available on tap – black, with some sugar.

Best item on the menu?

I don’t have any particular favorites, but during finals season, Hallowed usually introduces the Red Eyes Black Dragon and Blue Eyes White Dragon – variants on the red eye that are almost worth getting just for the names themselves.

What are you wearing?

A leather jacket from Banana Republic, button-down from Topman, Uniqlo denim and the shoes are purple Converse sneakers that I painted white!

How would you describe your personal style?

I’d say my personal style is a blend of streetwear and British high street fashion, for the most part. Most days, I’ll either dress up or down to reflect how I’m feeling that day.
