Fashion in Motion: Performance Art's Lasting Legacy

Fashion in Motion: Performance Art's Lasting Legacy

“I had experienced absolute freedom—I had felt that my body was without boundaries, limitless; that pain didn’t matter, that nothing mattered at all—and it intoxicated me.” - Marina Abramovic

Who doesn't love a good show? For decade, artists like Yoko Ono, Yves Klein and Marina Abramovic have been rattling the art world with performance pieces that have touched audience members in ways paintings and photographs may never be able to.

From allowing audience members to cut away pieces of clothing until nothing but the artist's naked body remains on stage, to commemorating the end of relationship by hiking the extent of the Great Wall and meeting their lover halfway, performance artists are consistently challenging the physical, emotional and psychological limits of humanity.

If the rise of non gender conforming fashion and street style that challenges our traditional understanding of beauty and the art of dress serve as any indicator of a broader shift in our cultural milieu, it appears as if fashion is striving to change social discourse in its own way. From W Magazine's playful recreations of some of the most iconic moments in performance art history to Celine's homage to Yves Klein's blue body forms, performance art continues to inspire the fashion world.
